Hulu is doubling down on Furious, as the Disney-owned streamer confirmed today that it’s ordered a second season of Elizabeth Meriwether and Emmy Rossum’s well-rated crime thriller. Co-starring Lola Petticrew as a serial killer who winds up in a cat-and-mouse game with Rossum’s dysfunctional FBI agent, the series has earned strong reviews off of its ability to blend standard crime show tropes with a more nuanced and focused look at the way violence against women creates a sort of murderous domino effect, one that, in this case, leaves a whole bunch of pretty awful dudes dead.
We’ve been pretty big fans of Furious, praising the way New Girl‘s Meriwether has managed her hard pivot into the world of skullduggery and fentanyl overdoses. In her season-wide review of the series, The A.V. Club‘s Saloni Gajjar praised the series for being “an incisive and empathetic look at female rage and the many ways in which women are wronged or set up to fail before taking matters into their own bloody hands.” Of especial interest: The back-and-forth between Rossum’s Alice and Quincy Taylor Bernstine’s veteran agent Nora, both of whom have to struggle with not being taken sufficiently seriously while having a clear line on the murderer stalking New York.
The real question here, meanwhile—now that we know another set of episodes is coming—is which model Meriwether’s show will follow as it seeks to continue itself. The press release for the renewal emphasizes that Rossum (who both stars in the show and executive produces) is still on board, but doesn’t namecheck the rest of the show’s cast; it’s not clear, thus, if a second season will continue the serial killer investigation that forms the spine of the first season, or whether that will wrap up with its finale next week, and the show will take on a more anthologized format as Alice continues her investigations into other crimes with similarly Furious themes.
