Disney returns live-action Gargoyles to frozen perch atop Magic Kingdom

Anyone looking to add Gargoyles to the list of failed live-action Disney remakes can put their pens away. Speaking to ComicsOnline, co-creator Greg Weisman declared the series “dead.” “I have no idea about animation,” Weisman said, “but there are no current plans for live-action.”

In 2023, Disney announced a live-action reboot of the ’90s cartoon about four stone statues trying to find love and themselves in the Big Apple, with Goliath (voiced by Keith David) serving as the series’ Carrie Bradshaw. (For the record: Ed Asner’s Hudson was obviously the Samantha.) The idea was to get Conjuring spin-off writer Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster to develop a fresh take on the series for Disney+. The proposed new show’s logline certainly sounds like the original series. It reads: “Based on the cult classic Disney animated series, Goliath is the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors who once lived among mankind. Free from a centuries-long curse that turned him into stone, Goliath struggles to solve the mystery of his past while watching over modern-day New York City alongside police detective Elisa Maza.”

This is no doubt a setback for those looking forward to being disappointed by the look of a CGI Goliath. However, if it makes anyone feel better, Brent Spiner, who voiced Puck on the original series, claims a new animated series is taking flight. “They’re doing Gargoyles again,” Spiner said on Dropping Names With Brent And Jonny, the podcast he hosts with fellow Trek and ‘Goyles star Jonathan Frakes, earlier this month. “I was told this morning. It’s another animated series.”
