Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects being adapted as a TV series

This is shaping up to be author and former television critic Gillian Flynn’s year. The David Fincher-helmed adaptation of her bestselling breakthrough novel, Gone Girl, is set to arrive in theaters on October 3. Her second book, Dark Places, has also been adapted into a film starring Charlize Theron and Christina Hendricks and is currently set for a September 1 release date. Now comes the news that Flynn’s debut novel, 2006’s Sharp Objects, will be adapted into a television series. The TV show model seems to be a more apt venue for the story, as Sharp Objects focuses on a journalist with a complicated psychological history who returns to her hometown to investigate a series of murders.

EOne Television has acquired the rights to adapt the work, and Un-Real series creator Marti Noxon—whose credits also include Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Mad Men, and Glee—has signed on as showrunner and writer. Though the books’ publication dates were spaced three years apart, Gone Girl’s runaway success put Flynn on hot streak, creating a wave of interest in her previous works. Thus far the author has only published three books, so the next Flynn adaptation is at least a year or two away.
