HBO's Girls, now pushing 40, are coming back

For all the obvious points of comparison between the two series, Girls is about to do what Sex And The City was never able to: A limited-run reboot series, bringing back all four main cast members to HBO proper. HBO announced today that it is bringing back Lena Dunham’s hit, discourse-generating series. The series will go into production next summer, bringing back Dunham, Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, and Jemima Kirke, along with honorary fifth Girl Andrew Rannells as Elijah. Judd Apatow is returning as executive producer, and the series will go into production next summer.

“We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” says Dunham in a press statement. “I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop… It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together… and the chance to wear yellow mesh…”

Since it went off the air in 2017, Girls has since been embraced by a whole new generation of people who move to Brooklyn to decimate their interpersonal relationships while trying to make their dreams come true. It’s unclear at this point whether any other original cast members—which included the likes of Adam Driver, Charlie Abbott, and Alex Karpovsky—will return. Driver’s relationship with Dunham was somewhat chronicled in her recent book Famesick, including occasional tension on the set, though Dunham doesn’t seem to harbor too many hard feelings. Take a look at the first teaser below.
