Grant Morrison, the mind-bending writer of Animal Man, New X-Men, and a paradigm-busting, redefining run on Batman, is taking on Ian Fleming’s superspy James Bond in a new comic series for IDW. Announced at New York Comic Con on Friday, Morrison’s “opening 6-part adventure,” titled Sunbreaker, promises a brave new world for Bond, in which the spy’s routine-yet-no-less-awesome gauntlet of espionage and gadgets will be “reflected in a deadly funhouse mirror.” Considering this is Grant Morrison we’re talking about here, that reflection will likely include a heady stew of internal self-perception brought about by medium-defying, panel-warping sorcery. Or just some really well-written, intelligent comics. Morrison wears many hats.
“I’ve been a James Bond fan for as long as I can remember and this opportunity to put my own stamp on a British character as iconic as King Arthur, Robin Hood or Sherlock Holmes, was too good to miss,” Morrison said in the release. Bringing both the celebrated writer and the 007 comics license, which previously had a high-profile launch at Dynamite Entertainment in 2015, is a big get for IDW. In fact, this year’s NYCC sees the publisher making another big swing with known properties, having teamed with horror factory Blumhouse to publish comics based on various film properties such as The Purge, Happy Death Day, and M3gan for its horror line, IDW Dark.
“I’m Morrison. Grant Morrison,” the writer said in a video announcement posted on social media. “We’re bringing Bond into the contemporary world of desert war, rogue AI, fake news, billionaire bad guys, and their assault on democracy, with new vehicles, new gadgets, and a terrifying new ultimate villain. James Bond faces the challenge of a lifetime and the collapse of a world order he swore to defend.”
“We hope you’ll join us, shaken or stirred,” Morrison said, hoisting a glass in a toast. You can watch their announcment in the video below.
