Grey's Anatomy pauses production in solidarity with national shutdown

America’s rising discontent in the face of the actions taken by the Trump White House and ICE—both on a national level, and in the city of Minneapolis specifically—continues to find expressions everywhere, even in what’s supposed to be the more deliberately frivolous world of pop culture. Take, for instance, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, which, at 22 seasons and counting, is about as well-oiled a TV-making machine as you could hope to see at this point. Nevertheless, the series declared a production stopdown today, in honor of calls for a nationwide work stoppage in response to the violence and unrest committed and provoked by federal authorities in the Twin Cities.

This is according to Deadline, which reports that crew members on the Shondaland medical drama let it be known that they wouldn’t be showing up for work on Friday, January 30, in deference to the wider work shutdown movement that’s been gaining popularity across America. Producers on the series responded by deciding to shut down production on the series for the day. Filming on the show, which is currently about halfway through its 22nd season, will reportedly resume on Saturday.

It’s not clear at present whether any other TV shows took similar measures today, as news of and support for the shutdowns was spread on social media by Hollywood figures like Ariana Grande and Pedro Pascal. (In addition, obviously, to the massive networks of people actually on the ground in cities around the country, organizing public opposition to Trump and ICE’s actions.) Over the past month—exacerbated and inflamed by the killing of multiple people by ICE agents in Minnesota—a number of Hollywood figures have commented on and endorsed the ICE Out movement, speaking out at Sundance, releasing protest songs, and appearing at public events condemning the federal agency’s actions in cities across America.
