Destin Daniel Cretton to catch gnarly wave with new Hawaii Five-O movie

The director is coming off the juggernaut success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Destin Daniel Cretton to catch gnarly wave with new Hawaii Five-O movie

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing domestic film ever, it’s clear director Destin Daniel Cretton can punch his ticket for virtually any project that excites him. And according to Deadline‘s The Dish, Cretton’s post-Naruto future appears to be riding a gnarly wave toward a Hawaii Five-O movie—which, if that’s what floats his surfboard, then good for him. (Cretton was born in Haʻikū, Maui, Hawaii.) Deadline is reporting that Cretton will “develop to direct” the Paramount Pictures feature, with Bad Boys For Life writer Chris Bremner teaming with Jackie‘s Noah Oppenheim to draft a script. No dates have been locked down, nor are there actors attached. 

Paramount is keeping mum about development this early in the going, though The Dish’s Mike Fleming Jr. reports that the project was assembled by talent management/production house Entertainment 36 with the estate of Five-O creator Leonard Freeman. Fleming also notes that Paramount got dibs on the project because, well, the 1968 series and its 2010 Scott Caan remake aired on CBS, which is owned by Paramount Skydance, and that’s how these things work. Until further Five-O updates roll in with the tide, now’s the time to submit your fan-castings for Hawaii coppers Steve McGarrett and Danny “Danno” Williams, before Ryan Gosling turns his baby blues in the direction of this thing.
