Calling her loosely autobiographical trio of sitcoms (the high school-set Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives Of College Girls) “the slightly less famous MCU,” Kaling had high hopes of continuing this latest chapter well into the future, noting after the series’ eventful New Years-spanning season finale, “I love the show so much, so I’d love to keep making it for years and years, and yes, I’m right now just keeping my fingers crossed.”
With a talented cast of lesser-known, vibrantly diverse young talents (Ella Hunt, Avantika, Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay, Insecure’s Jay Ellis), Not Suitable For Work consistently appeared in Hulu’s Daily Top 10 list. (Although with streaming services doing what they do, actual ratings are hard to pin down.) Meanwhile, while The A.V. Club’s Saloni Gajjar called the series “sweet and predictable” in its first season, she also praised the cast’s chemistry and said that the ensemble comedy had plenty of potential to grow along with its characters.
Alas, it’s not to be. Kaling, for her part, will have to comfort herself with the ongoing success of Running Point, the pro basketball-themed Kate Hudson-starring sitcom she created alongside Mindy Project pal Ike Barinholtz, whose third season was recently greenlit by Netflix. And no MCU ever truly dies, as Kaling has stated that she’s eyeing some more semi-autobiographical, age-progressing sitcoms, right up until she achieved her dream of a Mindy Kaling take on The Golden Girls somewhere down the line.
