Say what you will about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it certainly uses the whole buffalo. There isn’t a character that is too stupid, disliked, or mishandled to avoid being vacuumed back into the fray in hopes of pushing the nostalgia buttons in fans’ heads. Just this last year, we saw the return of Tim Blake Nelson’s Leader, a character from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk so unimportant that his supervillain name is never uttered. Sure, Brave New World failed to usher in one, but Disney has successfully resurrected Netflix’s version of things. Daredevil: Born Again has integrated the Netflix series into the broader MCU but won’t somebody please think of the Iron Fists?
Iron Fist actor Finn Jones sure is. Jones played Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist, on Netflix’s Iron Fist and The Defenders. The character and show were more or less disregarded at the time. Still, given that the Marvel Studios regularly launders forgotten characters for a nostalgia pop, there’s no reason to assume he or any of the other Defenders wouldn’t appear on one of the Studio’s many tendrils. Recently, per IGN, Jones appeared at the LaConve anime convention in Monterrey, NL, Mexico, where he responded to a question about whether Iron Fist could ever return.
“I’m very aware of the critiques of the character and my role in it,” Jones said. “My response to that is like, give me a fucking chance, man. I’m here and I’m ready. I want to prove people wrong. So I would love to see that happen.”
After recent reports that Marvel’s head of streaming and TV Brad Winderbaum was “exploring” bringing The Defenders back in, there’s never been a better time, and Jones is just waiting for someone “to give him a chance.” Could Finn Jones return to the MCU? Honestly, they brought back Rhys Ifans’ Lizard, Sir Ben Kingsley’s Trevor, and a half-dozen characters played by actors that fans would only know if they’ve spent the last decade reading geek blogs, industry trades, and the hacked Sony emails. Not only is it possible, but we should probably expect the return of Iron Fist.
