James Gunn’s current weird career split, between being both one of the chief executives of the comic book movie and TV branch of a major film studio, and its most successful director, has, happily, not gotten in the way of his side hustle: Posting regular updates about whatever he’s doing (or correcting people on) on social media. That most especially includes updates on projects that are “his” in multiple senses of the word, like next summer’s Superman sequel Man Of Tomorrow—which Gunn announced on social media today has finally completed principal photography.
Gunn celebrated the news by posting a shot of his “brain trust” on the movie, as well as a photograph of star Nicholas Hoult having apparently jumped in a lake to cool off after being roasted alive for obnoxious and now aborted casting decisions finishing his role as the DCU’s ongoing version of Lex Luthor. (Comic book fans being how they are, the comments on Gunn’s post have immediately filled up with questions about whether Hoult’s location resembles Salvation, the extradimensional planet John Cena’s Peacemaker got zapped to at the end of the second season of his HBO Max show.)
Of course, the mere fact that the cameras are shutting off doesn’t mean that Man Of Tomorrow—which stars a returning David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Edi Gathegi, and Skyler Gisondo, plus newcomer Lars Eidinger as evil computer guy Brainiac—is anywhere close to actually being finished. The movie is currently aimed at a July 9, 2027 release date, giving Gunn and the brain trust nearly a year to argue about things like whether it’s okay to call Superman a pussy in a nice, family-friendly superhero movie. (Reportedly the single biggest fight that happened on the set of the first Superman.) In the meantime, Gunn will presumably be slipping back into film executive mode, as he continues to stump for the currently running Lanterns, plus this October’s Clayface.
