The DC Studios co-CEO said that "Harley is a character I'm almost certainly going to use in the DCU," whether its with Robbie or another actor playing the anti-hero.

James Gunn thinks Margot Robbie is probably over playing Harley Quinn again

James Gunn really, really wants Margot Robbie to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in the DCU, but if she’s not interested, he’ll have to bite the bullet and recast the role. In a special one-off podcast episode titled The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?, Gunn and Peacemaker stars Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt) and Steve Agee (John Economos) discussed whether the 2021 movie The Suicide Squad, which was released as part of the DCEU, is canon in the new DC Comics ecosystem. Gunn acknowledged that he previously said it wasn’t, but he’s been reconsidering and decided to rewatch the movie to offer an updated verdict. Around the 27-minute mark of the podcast, the conversation inevitably turned to Harley Quinn, one of the comics’ most prominent and recognizable characters. Gunn said that the anti-hero is “one of the more difficult things” to justify as canon in the DCU. He said the Joker hasn’t been established in the DCU yet, “and obviously, Joker is a part of Harley’s past.”

Robbie made her debut as Harley in the 2016 movie Suicide Squad alongside Jared Leto as the Joker. She reprised the role for Birds Of Prey and The Suicide Squad. Gunn said Robbie “is one of my favorite actors to work with” and, in rewatching The Suicide Squad, he was reminded of how much he enjoyed her performance. “I love her as Harley,” he said. “I don’t know if she wants to play Harley again. She may be over that.” Holland noted that Robbie was already a big star when she agreed to play Harley. Since then, she’s stayed booked and busy with films like Babylon, Barbie, and Wuthering Heights. Meanwhile, the rebooted universe, known as the DCU, kicked off under Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran’s leadership with the animated series Creature Commandos followed by Superman starring David Corenswet. Other self-contained projects, like Matt Reeves’ The Batman, operate outside the main, interconnected universe. Gunn is nearly positive Harley will show up in the DCU, and if he gets his way, Robbie will play the character, whether it makes canonical sense or not. “I don’t know where Margot’s head is with all of this,” Gunn said. “Harley is a character I’m almost certainly going to use in the DCU, and if Margot wants to play her, then I’ll bend over backwards to explain that in the world. But if she doesn’t, then I might go with somebody else, where I don’t have to be attached to what happens to Harley in this movie.”
