January Jones and Kristen Schaal join Fox’s confusingly titled Last Man On Earth

Suggesting that the title of Fox’s upcoming Will Forte comedy series The Last Man On Earth is either very inaccurate or very literal, TV Line is reporting that January Jones and Kristen Schaal will be joining the series. As we’ve previously noted, the show—which already has a straight-to-series order and is being executive produced by The Lego Movie’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller—will star Forte as the eponymous last man on Earth, but given this casting announcement, there’s a good chance that’s not the case. TV Line claims that some of the series will take place in flashbacks, but it’s equally possible that Forte’s character has found himself in a Y: The Last Man scenario and he’s actually the only male on the planet, not the only human. Either way, we know January Jones will be playing a character named Melissa, and Schaal will be playing Carol Pilbasian, but those names don’t really tell us anything.

Complicating things further is the fact that Australian actress Cleopatra Coleman and Getting On’s Mel Rodriguez have also signed on to Last Man On Earth. One of them being a man, this seems to ruin the “Will Forte on a female-only planet” theory, but at least we can still dream about that scenario. Last Man On Earth will premiere on Fox in March, at which point we’ll finally know what’s really going on in the plot.
