Jessica Rothe is hoping her recent horror movie runs means good news for Happy Death Day 3

Viewers who took a chance on Christopher Landon’s oddball horror comedy Happy Death Day back in 2017 typically came away with two major thoughts: “Having a main character who can’t permanently die kind of messes up the slasher formula, huh?” But then, also, “This Jessica Rothe sure is giving it her all regardless.” Rothe made further impressions in the film’s sequel, shoring up the comedy side of its horror-comedy efforts—before reported budget concerns from producer Blumhouse apparently detonated plans for third film Happy Death Day To Us. Rothe has spent the last few years since then bouncing around, co-starring in last year’s “Netflix medical drama that got messily devoured by The Pitt” series Pulse, before pivoting back into horror, where she’s set to appear in fully five different films, between festivals and theaters, in 2026. (Including the recently opened Beware Boiúna, where she and co-star Kiana Madeira exhibit considerable effort trying to lift the big snake movie out of the muck.) But she also hasn’t lost hope that Happy Death Day 3 might some day actually happen.

This is per a new interview Rothe gave to THR this week, where she discussed the long road she’s been on in recent years, including touching base with Jason Blum after his company picked up her horror movie River out of TIFF last month. As for Happy Death Day, she revealed that she and Landon are still keeping its dream alive: The duo met up earlier this year to talk about the initial script Landon had written for the movie, and how they could update it to accommodate the seven years since Happy Death Day 2U. (Landon has, of course, been on his own journey—including that bit where he was all set to direct Scream 7 before circumstances beyond his control detonated the project and sent it into the hands of Kevin Williamson.) “Work begets work,” Rothe notes, “And my hope is that River getting a longer life—and a life in front of a larger audience—is wonderful for every single person involved. And maybe that cup will runneth over and spill over into some good juju for Happy Death Day 3 and Freaky Death Day.” (The latter being the suggested crossover between Landon’s Groundhog Day riff and his Freaky-Friday-as-slasher-movie homage from 2020.)

And if not? Well, it’s the kind of idea that can wait. “Hopefully, if all the stars align, we get to shoot it in the next little bit,” Rothe said of Happy Death Day 3. “But even if we don’t, it’s not a story that’s going to time out. There is no [mandatory] timeline in terms of when it makes sense for us to make this movie, and that’s one of the things that I love about it… It’s so exciting to really jump forward and see what’s going on with Tree and her life and if her life has gone how she thought it was going to go.” (Before, presumably, getting murdered a whole bunch again, once another lethal timeloop has her in its grasp.)
