Rip director Joe Carnahan accused of sexual battery in messy lawsuit

Action director Joe Carnahan, who recently experienced a career resurgence with his Netflix hit The Rip, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, has been accused of sexual battery, assault, and stalking in a legal filing from an ex-girlfriend, per The Hollywood Reporter. After beginning a relationship with lawyer Michelle Crosby in 2020, Carnahan urged Crosby to move from Manhattan to Los Angeles, where the relationship quickly soured, according to the suit. During their four years together, Crosby says Carnahan assaulted her numerous times, with incidents including choking, pushing her into a Christmas tree, and striking “her repeatedly through a sofa cushion while pinning her beneath his nearly 300-pound frame.” The allegations emerged in a cross-complaint filed by Crosby in response to a lawsuit by Carnahan, who claims Crosby damaged a Porsche he let her borrow. Carnahan denies the allegations.

Making things more complicated, during their time together, Crosby was arrested twice for domestic violence against Carnahan, his kids, and her mother, a statement through the director’s reps reads. After the cushion incident, for example, it was Crosby, not Carnahan who was arrested for domestic violence and was issued a court order that barred her from contacting the director after her release  “It’s very upsetting that Joe and his family have been subjected to an endless retaliatory campaign of baseless allegations from an individual who has twice been arrested for domestic violence — against both Joe and his children and by the person’s own mother — and the same someone who stole a car leased in Joe’s name and was involved in a DUI hit & run involving a municipal bus, causing bodily injury to others.” The statement also claims that Crosby “consistently threatened Joe with exactly what you’re reading now – the threat to attack Joe publicly when [The Rip] was released.”

Nevertheless, Crosby maintains that there is a “lapse in accountability” and an “abuse of power by a prominent Hollywood figure now enjoying renewed success.” Carnahan seeks $33,000 for the Porsche and a court order barring Crosby from contacting him. She seeks at least $3 million for luxury items she claims Carnahan stole from her storage facility.
