(And, look, we know thinking about someone who has it worse than you is a pretty simple carb when it comes to base human satisfaction, but there’s a perverse satisfaction in imagining the PR team that’s trying to manage the image of Peréz‘s heretofore extremely successful Oscars campaign slowly, steadily losing their minds this past week.)
Writing on Instagram, Gascón continued to explain that she’s sorry for those bad tweets that we’ve all been maliciously misinterpreting, writing (per Deadline) that, “I have a lot to learn in this world, this being my main flaw. Life has taught me something I never wanted to learn: It is clear to me that no matter how much your message is one [thing], without using the correct words, it becomes another.” This acknowledgement of the basic concept of language was followed by an assertion that “They have already won, they have achieved their objective, to sully, with lies or things taken out of context my existence.” (All of this is coming via translations from the original Spanish, to be clear.) Gascón seemed to be bound and determined to nail all the non-apology apology greatest hits here; she even managed to get in a classic “one of my best friends is Muslim” flex. (Among the tweets Gascón was dinged for were ones seeming to criticize Muslim immigrants in her native Spain.) And then, a little more conspiracy thinking for the road, stating that her words have been misconstrued as “insulting even my colleagues, things that I wrote to glorify as if they were criticisms, jokes as if they were reality, words that without background only appear hateful. All as long as I don’t win anything and sink.”
We look forward to hypothetical news that Gascón has next deleted her Instagram account, followed seconds later by a tearful denunciation popping up in her LinkedIn endorsements.
