Lady Bones makes sludge palatable with “Weight”

Few would describe sludge as music that’s immediately palatable, but that’s the case that Boston’s Lady Bones is trying to make. Last year’s Dying saw the band wrapping pop hooks in slow-burning riffs, and on its new EP the trio takes it all a step further. The A.V. Club is premiering “Weight,” the first song from Terse, which will be released on April 29 via Midnight Werewolf Records. Lady Bones is still writing riffs that rumble slowly toward a thesis, but more than ever the band is putting pop conventions first. Vocalist-guitarist Sean Gilston makes use of a vocal melody that’s familiar without feeling trite, as the rest of the band chugs through riffs that are heavy yet hummable.
