Refreshingly, DC boss says Lanterns will only get a season 2 if there's a good enough story

HBO’s Lanterns series had a lot riding on it after Supergirl‘s unexpectedly underwhelming box office put the James Gunn-Peter Safran DCU’s seemingly bright future in jeopardy. Thankfully for DC, Lanterns proved a critical and ratings hit, with the first season’s True Detective-inspired tone and surprisingly nuanced take on the superhero gig pointing the DC ship decidedly upwards in the lead-up to Gunn’s Man Of Tomorrow.

All of which would seem to make a second season of the Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King-created series a no-brainer. But, according to DC Studios co-boss Safran’s conversation with IGN, the Lanterns team is once again bucking the superhero sequel trend by holding off until there’s actually a new story worth telling.

“Listen, we’ll see what happens with Lanterns season 2,” said Safran. “If, I think, the collective group of HBO and DC and Chris Mundy and the team all feel like we’ve got something that is a worthy successor to quite a beloved first season of television, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see more.” Safran noted that, whichever way the Lanterns writers room goes, the decision of whether to greenlight (you get it) a follow-up season or to let John Stewart’s Green Lantern continue his adventures on the big screen only will be made by the end of 2026.

As to Aaron Pierre’s Stewart, the upright former Marine whose hard lessons learned from Earth’s aging GL Hal Jordan saw him bucking tradition to set out on his own heroic path, Safran tells fans not to worry. Says Safran, “The episodic world is always going to be a really important part of our overall slate, it’s a great way to tell stories that need more real estate than a feature film can offer you, and it’s a great way to introduce characters that we then bring into the feature world. And I think that Aaron Pierre and John Stewart are a perfect example of that. We introduced him in Lanterns, and audiences will see him next summer in Man of Tomorrow. So, it’s really important to us in continuing to tell aspects of the story that we’re not telling in the feature film world, so there’s more to come.”

Safran was mum on the prospect of any further involvement from Pierre’s invaluable co-star Kyle Chandler, but with Lanterns dropping enough potential hints as to how his Hal Jordan (or at least his “Halogram”) could return, no doubt the writers are exploring all possibilities of keeping Chandler in the mix.
