New procedurals may rise and spin-offs may be spun, but there still ain’t nothing like the Law & Order franchise on television. Or on streaming, as Peacock’s Law & Order: Organized Crime season five teaser goes to show. Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) is back for another go-around (premiering April 17), as he narrates in the teaser: “The pain… the things I’ve seen… all in the pursuit of one thing: Justice.”
Justice with a side order of drama, it sounds like! According to a press release from Peacock, “Season five explores the dangerous worlds of cross-border smuggling, high-tech domestic terrorism and a crime family intent on repaying Stabler for the injury he did them in Rome. As his worlds collide, Stabler will put everything on the line to protect the vulnerable and fight for justice.” Teasing the 10-episode fifth season for Entertainment Weekly, Meloni said it would be a “powerful” watch for “people who have followed the journey of Stabler, which is all about this driven cop in the cop world. We’ve been watching him do it for nearly two decades now, so with all his flaws, Stabler has become a cautionary tale.”
Law & Order: Organized Crime has seen a fair bit of turnover since its premiere in 2021; the show cycled through seven different showrunners since its inception. The most recent, John Shiban, apparently left mid-production of season five, according to a report from TVLine earlier this month. No replacement has yet been named, but executive producer Matt Olmstead (who himself abdicated the job before the show premiered) is apparently “assisting the production with the season’s last few episodes,” per the outlet. This is in addition to the show getting bumped from network to streaming for the upcoming season.
