Lil Buck and Yo-Yo Ma, together at last
Classical music/dance and hip-hop are not mutually exclusive, as evidenced by the sort of movement mash-ups that have become standard in recent dance movies like Save The Last Dance, Center Stage, and the Step Up series. But a ballerina booty-popping to “When I Get You Alone” is one thing; Memphis jookin’ to the cello solo from Mikhail Fokine’s The Dying Swan is quite another. And when the duo responsible for such a combination is YouTube jookin’ fixture Lil Buck and the-only-cellist-most-people-can-name Yo-Yo Ma, well, that’s something worth seeing.
It should come as a surprise to no one that this collaboration was masterminded by Spike Jonze, and performed at an event to keep arts education in schools.
