Lilly Wachowski says Harry Potter fans are funding "trans genocide"

The Matrix filmmaker claims that watching the new J.K. Rowling adaptation "is supporting my eradication."

Lilly Wachowski says Harry Potter fans are funding

In a wide-ranging Variety interview promoting her new Anarchists United Foundation and Anarchists United Studio dedicated to funding marginalized filmmakers, Work In Progress executive producer Lilly Wachowski was asked about whether or not people should watch the new HBO series adaptation of noted and rabid transphobe J.K. Rowling’s once-beloved fantasy series. And Wachowski, characteristically, did not hold back.

“She is funding trans genocide,” Wachowski stated bluntly. “J.K. Rowling funds trans genocide, full stop. So, if you support Harry Potter, you’re supporting trans genocide. The money that goes into you enjoying these products, a portion of that money goes to J.K. Rowling and that money goes into her funding anti-trans legislation all over the world.”

Not content to go after Rowling’s relentless harassment of trans people, Wachowski compared viewers potentially kicking back to enjoy the impending Potter cash grab to people still buying a certain luxury vehicle. “In the same way that if you are against Elon Musk, you boycott or don’t buy Tesla,” continued Wachowski, concluding, “It’s simple math. So, your enjoyment of these shows, and continued support of these shows, is supporting my eradication.”

Wachowski’s unequivocal “no” on the question of whether it’s cool to claim trans allyship while watching a virulent bigot’s unnecessary reboot of her most famous franchise comes as Rowling successfully bullied human rights organization Amnesty International UK for daring suggest Rowling’s “women-only,” trans-excluding organizations were discriminatory. The stain of the author’s long history of anti-trans bigotry has recently seen actor Nicolas Hoult bail out of the HBO reboot after fan backlash, while other actors have felt compelled to clarify that their participation does not signal their agreement with Rowling’s abhorrent views. (They’re still cashing those checks, though.)

Meanwhile, Wachowski states that her pitches for various “cool and queer trans stories” have been met with rejection for years until she and co-founders Sarah Marie Flores and Lawrence Mattis launched Anarchists United, whose first project will be the docuseries Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF, debuting on YouTube on September 16.
