Luca Guadagnino reportedly sets real Artificial movie about OpenAI

As usual, Luca Guadagnino is racking up projects left and right. Deadline reports that the buzzy director is in talks to helm Artificial for Amazon MGM Studios. Sources for the outlet suggest the script, written by Saturday Night Live alum Simon Rich, “revolves around the period at the artificial intelligence company OpenAI in 2023 that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a matter of days.” Guadagnino’s After The Hunt star Andrew Garfield is being eyed for the project, as is A Complete Unknown‘s Monica Barbaro (coincidentally—or not—Garfield and Barbaro are dating). Anora‘s Yura Borisov is also in talks to join the project.

None of the deals have officially closed, and Luca Guadagnino is also notorious for leaving unrealized projects in his wake—for instance, the Brideshead Revisited adaptation he was supposed to make with Garfield years ago. Separate Rooms, which the filmmaker claimed would be his “next movie,” has lost its star (“He may well do it, but unfortunately it won’t be with me,” Josh O’Connor told Deadline last month) and American Psycho is a big question mark. According to Deadline, Guadagnino was gearing up for his DC movie Sgt. Rock, but once that fell through he “moved quickly to find something he could get up and running this year and mulled several options before landing on Artificial.” He’s ostensibly aiming to shoot this year once the actors are locked in.

The new titans of digital enterprise are a hot commodity in the entertainment industry right now, whether it’s partnering with OpenAI behind the scenes or making a movie about it, um, in front of the scenes. The other Silicon Valley Sam (Bankman-Fried) is the subject of multiple Hollywood projects at the moment. Say Nothing‘s Anthony Boyle was cast as Bankman-Fried opposite Julia Garner in Netflix’s The Altruists. Lena Dunham is also reportedly working on a Bankman-Fried project for A24. There are several projects floating around with AI as the subject, but then, that’s not really a new preoccupation for showbiz.
