"I didn't think about it, honestly," the Weekend Update host said.

Since Shane Gillis‘ controversial Saturday Night Live monologue last weekend, Michael Che has dreaded being asked about it while promoting his new stand-up special for Netflix (he even joked about it on Instagram). Yet when the time came during a Thursday morning interview on The Today Show, he awkwardly hemmed and hawed through host Laura Jarrett’s persistent questions. “That’s comedy. It’s like, you think it’s funny and then some people don’t,” Che said. When Jarrett asked if he laughed at Gillis’ remarks, Che said that he was preoccupied with the cue cards, “thinking about what I was going to say that was going to make people upset.” Che added he didn’t watch the monologue until the next day. When the host pressed him for a more substantial answer, he paused for a long time before saying, “I didn’t think about it, honestly.”
