We write about TV shows getting canceled all the time. (So frequently on Friday nights, in fact, that we have a recurring Friday Night TV Murder Pile to mourn the more ignominious deaths.) But even so, this is a new one on us: Apple TV+ has canceled its four-season video game comedy Mythic Quest, which already aired its full fourth seasonBut, the streamer is allowing the show to “update” its season finale next week to turn it into a more proper ending for the show.

Both halves of the news were, per Variety, confirmed in a statement tonight by series execs Rob McElhenney, David Hornsby, and Megan Ganz, who wrote that, “Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to build—and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it. To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning.” All very sweet, but also very standard for a show on its way out. But then: “Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing we made one final update to our last episode—so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.” Variety notes that the new version of the episode will debut on Apple TV+ some time next week.

As fans of the series know, Mythic Quest‘s fourth season ended on a pretty surprising cliffhanger, with long-time friends/rivals/hated enemies/creative partners/etc. Ian (McElhenney) and Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) sharing a sudden, shocking kiss. God only knows what the update will make of that, since we have no idea right now how substantial the addition will end up being. It is, undeniably, a nice gesture from Apple, though: We’ve seen enough shows get killed off with little more than a “Thanks for the memories” that letting the series actually bid farewell is one of the rare things streaming can do that regular TV can’t that’s genuinely kind of nice.

Mythic Quest ran for four seasons, plus two specials; it also spawned an anthology spin-off, Side Quest, which aired earlier this year.
