The Microsoft reboot chime is officially an “audio treasure worthy of preservation for all time.” That lofty designation comes directly from the Library of Congress, which just inducted it—along with 24 other recordings—into its National Recording Registry, per Deadline

The public nominated over 2,600 works for inclusion this year, from which the Library of Congress selected the chosen inductees based on their “cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.” The 2025 class also includes Chicago’s 1969 record Chicago Transit Authority (which reportedly topped the list for most nominations), Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Tracy Chapman’s 1988 self-titled album, “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion, the Hamilton original Broadway cast recording, and Minecraft: Volume Alpha, among others.

“These are the sounds of America—our wide-ranging history and culture. The National Recording Registry is our evolving nation’s playlist,” Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said in a statement. It would certainly be an eclectic one to throw on if you were in control of the AUX cord. Past years’ inductees include everything from “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey to the Super Mario Bros. theme to WNYC’s 9/11 broadcasts.

Have anything you want to add to the jam? Nominations for 2026 will be accepted on the Library of Congress’ website through October 1. In the meantime, here’s the full list of 2025 inductees in chronological order, via Deadline:
