Netflix to debut Duncan Jones’ Mute before rolling it out in theaters

Duncan Jones’ upcoming film Mute will be released on Netflix, according to its star Alexander Skarsgård. Skarsgård stopped by the Empire Podcast and revealed that Mute—which is currently filming in Berlin—will get a Beasts Of No Nation-style release. Which means that in addition to debuting on the streaming platform, the film will also get a limited theatrical run, largely to allow it to qualify for awards.

As we previously reported, the film stars Skarsgård as a mute bartender living in Berlin 40 years in the future. He sets out in search of his missing girlfriend and along the way runs into a surgeon played by Paul Rudd. Jones has previously stated that Sam Rockwell will also appear in the film, although Skarsgård was coy about a potential Rockwell cameo. Either way, Jones has confirmed that Mute will connect to his beloved 2009 debut film, Moon, which does star Rockwell.

For his part, Skarsgård tells Empire that he’s really pumped about the Blade Runner-inspired film. “I’ve just got back from Dublin where Duncan showed me all the renderings and the visuals of it,” he explains, “and I’m very, very excited about it.” You can hear the full interview when the Empire Podcast drops tomorrow.
