New Girl cast reunites to roast Max Greenfield—oh, and for charity

Max Greenfield took a Schmidt-style ribbing from his former New Girl castmates on Saturday. After stoking (it appears) unfounded rumors of a reunion of the much-loved ensemble sitcom starring Zooey Deschanel back in August, the chastened actor welcomed the loft-mates to instead receive the coveted Rising Phoenix Award at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball on Saturday.

Given by non-profit Chrysalis for aiding the organization’s work placement and preparedness mission, the award attracted Jake Johnson, Deschanel, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, and Damon Wayans Jr to the Los Angeles awards show stage. Greenfield was already on hand as the night’s host. And while they all celebrated the good work being done by the charitable organization like good honorees, The Hollywood Reporter notes that it didn’t take much prodding for the reassembled crew to start jabbing Greenfield for his loose lips like Schmidt looking for his driving moccasins.

“We especially would like to thank Max, who while organizing this announced that an actual New Girl reunion was happening and he made our lives so very annoying,” quipped Deschanel while accepting her award. Johnson added some very Nick Miller-style put-downs of his own, saying of Greenfield’s misrepresentation of a series of text chain jokes between Johnson and Morris, “He did such a bad job it was unbelievable.” Johnson added, “So that is Max being Max. There was zero strategy. He texted me after and said, ‘I think I did a bad job.’ And he did.”

Greenfield, for his part, could only grin and take the shots, explaining, “Now is probably not the most appropriate time to apologize for this but yes, that’s something that happened and I am sorry. It did, however, bring a lot of attention to Chrysalis and what we are doing here tonight, accidentally.” Still, if there’s a “raising fans hopes and then dashing them” jar, Greenfield definitely owes everyone a crisp hundo.
