Newlyweds creator celebrates sitcom's upcoming debut by announcing NBC just fired her

In what does not feel like an especially auspicious beginning for a new sitcom, Gail Lerner—co-creator, with star Jamie Lee Curtis, of new NBC sitcom Newlyweds—celebrated the show’s upcoming October 23 debut by announcing that NBC just shitcanned her. Lerner made the reveal in an Instagram post that put a fairly extreme spin on the old “Good news, bad news” routine: “Here’s the good news: I couldn’t be more proud of the new sitcom Newlyweds that I created with the singular Jamie Lee Curtis. Premieres 10/23! Here’s the bad news: I got fired off it today.”

Lerner—a network comedy vet whose credits stretch back to the original run of Will And Grace—says she was given “creative differences” as the reason for her departure, and declined to go into further details. (She did offer up that “The cast, crew, and writers are unparalleled,” which suggests that she’s not harboring any particular negative feelings toward any particular on-screen talent.) She clarified that she made the first six episodes of the show’s first season, inviting fans who enjoy those offerings to let her know. (“If you don’t,” Lerner—who’s probably all full up on creative criticism at the moment—wrote, “Keep it to yourself.”)

For the unfamiliar, Newlyweds stars Tim Daly and Téa Leoni (a real-life married couple who started a relationship while making Madam Secretary together) as a pair of older folks who—to deploy a reference that all of America’s behind-the-scenes TV drama-loving children will get—Dharma And Greg themselves into a lightning-fast Vegas wedding. Curtis co-stars as Daly’s character’s ex-wife, while comedy actor Bill O’Neill appears prominently in the show’s first trailer as a character we can only think of—second extremely hip sitcom reference of the paragraph incoming—as “going the full Balki.”

Per THR, an NBC spokesperson has confirmed the shitcanning.
