Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas are your new True Detectives

Women had their fun in Night Country; now, it's time that True Detective goes back to a weirdly eccentric movie star and his exhausted other half.

Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas are your new True Detectives

After a season in the female-fronted Night Country, now, to the delight of series creator Nic Pizzolatto and boys on the internet, men are returning to True Detective. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the new season will feature plenty of Y chromosomes, with Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas exploring the decaying and possibly haunted stretches of the United States as detectives Henry Logan and Rai Garcia, respectively. It is an exceptionally interesting combination that finally lives up to the memes True Detective has inspired since the first season. In hindsight, the show hasn’t followed up on movie star pairings we all assumed it might. Season two was about Colin Farrell telling an “evil as fuck” 12-year-old he would “butt fuck your father with your mother’s headless corpse“; season three featured a solo Mahershala Ali growing old; and Night Country had Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, which was pretty good but lacked the A-list coupling that could one day power an Apple TV show.

Though men are returning in front of the camera, Night Country showrunner Issa López will remain behind it. She’s also writing and directing the new season as she did previously. López directed all six installments of season four and was credited as writer or co-writer on every episode too.

Of course, some of the news was spoiled by the unpredictable half of the new twosome. At New York Comic-Con last week, Cage blurted out that he was joining the new season, which had been rumored for over a year. “I think I’m probably gonna do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective,” he spontaneously told the crowd. “That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?”
