Nicolas Cage to star in movie about mass hysteria, naturally
Somebody might have finally come up with the perfect movie to showcase the singularly bewildering acting of Nicolas Cage. The very busy actor has agreed to star in Mom and Dad, a horror thriller about two kids’ attempt to survive a 24-hour mass hysteria of unknown origins that compels parents to try to murder their own children. And yeah, Cage plays the dad.
“This is the kind of role Nick was put here to play: Human, funny, scary — somehow grounded while at the same time completely off the rails,” the film’s writer-director Brian Taylor said in a statement. “For a filmmaker there is nothing quite like the experience of Nick Cage bringing a character you’ve written to life.”
The two worked together once before on the loud and absurd 2012 Marvel comic adaptation Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which Taylor co-directed with Mark Neveldine. Taylor has also co-written and co-directed (with Neveldine) strange, super-high-energy films like the two Crank features and Gamer. So, it’s a pretty safe bet that a movie of his that requires Nicolas Cage to lose his mind and menace terrified children while civilization crumbles around him will be at least a little bit crazy.
Mom and Dad begins filming in July.
