Noah Baumbach’s Netflix era is over, and his Warner Bros. era is just beginning. Variety reports that after producing four films with the streaming giant, Baumbach has signed a three-year first-look deal with the studio. The deal takes effect next year, and while there aren’t too many details about his first project under it yet, it will be released under WB’s new indie label Clockwork.
As Variety points out, it’s not especially surprising that Baumbach would go to Warner Bros. after having co-authored the screenplay for Barbie with his collaborator and wife Greta Gerwig. Baumbach’s movies for Netflix did decently well, at least as far as movies that barely get released in theaters are concerned. 2019’s Marriage Story received perhaps the most attention, earning Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and for both of its lead actors, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson and earned Laura Dern a win; even so, it hardly made anything at the box office given its limited release. 2022’s White Noise grossed less than $100,000 against a budget that was reported to go north of $100 million, which, again, isn’t that unusual for Netflix but presents a pretty stark contrast to something like Barbie. Time will tell how this will bode for a movie we’re today calling Barbie 2: Back In The Dreamhouse.
