“Think of the furthest place north you’ve ever been. Now keep going,” the protagonist of upcoming Netflix series North Of North, instructs at the beginning of the show’s new trailer. You may feel inclined to reach for your heaviest parka, but despite its chilly setting, the trailer is actually quite warm and inviting.

North Of North—Netflix’s first ever Canadian original series—follows Siaja (Anna Lambe), a “modern Inuk woman,” living in the fictional town of Ice Cove, Nunavut, located in the heart of the Arctic Circle. She’s married to the “town golden boy,” but in the words of Chappell Roan, wakes up one day and realizes she’s nothing more than his wife. After his negligence lands her in some icy water (literally), she realizes it’s time to make a change.

Creators Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril are both Inuit and live in Iqaluit, the 8,000 person capital of Nunavut on which Ice Cove is based. “We wanted a show that felt real for us and Inuit everywhere,” Arnaquq-Baril told Tudum. “We wanted to be able to play with regional differences in clothing and fashion, slang, and senses of humor, while not being limited to one exact community.”

Lambe, who also lives in Iqaluit, added, “People constantly came up to me to hug me and let them know how proud they were of me and how exciting this was for the territory, for Inuit and Indigenous film and television… [Inuit support] pushed us to make sure we did our best work and represented the community in the best way because, ultimately, this is who we created it for.”

The eight-episode series premieres April 10 on Netflix.
