October 2025 TV preview: HBO's It prequel, Down Cemetery Road, and Tim Robinson

Spooky season is about to hit the small screen. Next month promises two chilling true-crime dramas, Netflix’s Monster and Peacock’s Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy. Plus, HBO finally unveils its much-anticipated It prequel series, in which Bill Skarsgård reprises his role as Pennywise; AMC adds Talamasca to its Anne Rice roster; and Prime Video drops a creepy show co-written by Harlan Coben. On the non-frightening front, network staples like Abbott Elementary and Law & Order: SVU return. And there are some newbies, too, including a comedy starring and co-created by Tim Robinson and Cooper Raiff’s family dramedy Hal & Harper. Here is The A.V. Club’s guide to what to watch on TV in October.

Monster: The Ed Gein Story (October 3, Netflix)

After tackling the sagas of Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez Brothers, Monster co-creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan find their next subject in serial killer Ed Gein (Charlie Hunnam), who confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s and was suspected of being a body snatcher. His crimes—depicted quite creepily in the trailer above—were an inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock’s (Tom Hollander) Psycho. And the show also features characters like Ted Bundy (John T. O’Brien) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Tobe Hooper (Will Brill). [Saloni Gajjar]

Saturday Night Live season 51 (October 4, NBC)

SNL has already had a major year with massive season 50 celebrations and an exodus over the summer that included fan favorites Ego Nwodim, Michael Longfellow, and Heidi Gardner. The sketch series returns with new faces like Dropout’s Jeremy Culhane and TikTok-famous comedian Veronika Slowikowska, with Bad Bunny, show alum Amy Poehler, and Sabrina Carpenter taking on hosting duties. The Chair Company (October 12, HBO)

“I’m right about a lot of things that people have zero clue that they even know is going on,” proclaims project head William Ronald Trosper (Tim Robinson) in HBO’s conspiracy-fueled comedy. The latest collaboration between Robinson and Zach Kanin, who previously brought us the brilliant sitcom Detroiters and I Think You Should Leave, also features Lake Bell, Sophia Lillis, and Will Price and boasts writers like The Other Two‘s Sarah Schneider and MacGruber‘s John Solomon. DMV (October 13, CBS)

Harriet Dyer (Colin From Accounts) leads this new CBS sitcom alongside the ever-reliable Tim Meadows. Created by Friends writer Dana Klein, the comedy explores the daily eccentricities faced by employees at East Hollywood’s DMV, who, as Dyer’s character claims in the trailer, “work in a dead-end job for crappy pay and no hope of happiness.” The ensemble also includes SNL‘s Molly Kearney and The Righteous Gemstones‘ Tony Cavalero. Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy (October 16, Peacock)

In Devil In Disguise, Michael Chernus portrays John Wayne Gacy, a.k.a. the Killer Clown, while Gabriel Luna stars as a primary investigating officer. The eight episodes unpack the Midwestern murderer’s crimes, the systemic failures that delayed his capture, and the trauma endured by the victims’ families. [Saloni Gajjar]

Hal & Harper (October 19, MUBI)

Cha Cha Real Smooth‘s Cooper Raiff writes, directs, and stars in this dramedy, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year and streams in the U.S. and France on MUBI. Raiff and Lili Reinhart tackle the show’s close titular siblings, who cope with the news that their father (portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, quite the busy actor this season) and his girlfriend (played by Betty Gilpin) are having a kid. [Tim Lowery]

Lazarus (October 22, Prime Video)

Co-created by bestselling author Harlan Coben (whose book Shelter was turned into a Prime Video show) and Danny Brocklehurst, Lazarus centers on a forensic psychologist (played by Sam Claflin) who returns home after his father (portrayed by Bill Nighy) dies by suicide. However, while solving cold cases—including the murder of his sister 25 years ago—he begins having strange experiences that make him question everything. [Saloni Gajjar]

IT: Welcome To Derry (October 26, HBO)

Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) unleashes his bloody wrath again just in time for Halloween in this It prequel. Set in 1962, the show follows a couple (played by Jovan Adepo and Taylour Paige) who move to the titular Maine town with their young son. Welcome To Derry traces the place’s evil lore and ties them to historical events that are canon in Stephen King’s work, including the burning of a juke joint and a gang massacre. Chris Chalk, James Remar, and Madeleine Stowe co-star.  [Saloni Gajjar]

Talamasca: The Secret Order (October 26, AMC)

AMC’s Anne Rice Universe expands with the franchise’s third series, which focuses on the men and women responsible for tracking supernatural creatures around the globe. In the show, Nicholas Denton’s Guy Anatole is about to graduate from law school when he gets pulled into a secretive agency and finds himself dealing with immortals. Expect brief appearances by Eric Bogosian and Justin Kirk, who reprise their roles from Interview With The Vampire here. [Saloni Gajjar]

Down Cemetery Road (October 29, Apple TV+)

Apple TV+ continues to be in the Mick Herron business with this thriller, which is based on the book of the same name by the Slough House series novelist. Emma Thompson stars as a private investigator who’s hired by a concerned citizen (played by Ruth Wilson) to figure out what’s what after an explosion and a missing child rock a peaceful Oxford suburb. Four Lions‘ Adeel Akhtar, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Happy-Go-Lucky‘s Sinéad Matthews help round out the cast. [Tim Lowery]
