Oz The Great And Powerful getting a sequel, so you can find out what happens next 

With Oz The Great And Powerful on track to placate thousands of families this weekend, Disney is, naturally, already planning a sequel that is even more explicitly a remake of The Wizard Of Oz, because come on, now. We’re all grown-ups and powerful movie studios here. Let’s stop with this “prequel” hemming and hawing, and get down to putting some CGI in The Wizard Of Oz. As Variety notes, returning screenwriter Mitchell Kapner “can work with what’s featured in L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, which is public domain. But he can’t use any of the iconic creative additions from the original film—Dorothy’s ruby slippers, for example—as Warner Bros. owns the 1939 film.” It’s the same circumstances that produced Oz The Great And Powerful, in other words, only this time the filmmakers have the ability to claim it’s a more “faithful” adaptation of the source material than the 1939 film, while still leaning heavily on the brand recognition of and lingering affection for the 1939 film. And since you already know how this story plays out, after you buy your tickets, you can just go to sleep! Just let those big ol’ droopy eyelids slide on shut now… You’ve earned it.
