Paramount is developing the first version of a Cyberpunk 2077 movie

The infamously buggy video game, with a much-heralded create-a-penis feature, had a disastrous 2020 release.

Paramount is developing the first version of a Cyberpunk 2077 movie

In what is likely the first stage of an eight-year development process before releasing the film, then pulling it because it’s all glitchy, Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) have begun development on a Cyberpunk 2077 movie, per Deadline. It’s the latest in a series of video game-forward efforts to leverage the mega studio’s abundance of intellectual property. Paramount also has a Call Of Duty movie in the works and a Street Fighter movie ready for release.

Cyberpunk follows a mercenary named V as he stalks around the expansive Night City. During a heist to collect a biochip known as “The Relic,” things go haywire, forcing V to implant the chip in his brain, plaguing him with the consciousness of a rockstar terrorist named Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves in the game), who begins to overwrite his host, sending V on a quest to destroy Arasaka Corporation and remove the chip.

Despite releasing to refund demands from disgruntled gamers, and after many patches, updates, and an expansion, Cyberpunk 2077 became a success for CD Projekt Red, selling more than 40 million copies. It even inspired an animated series on Netflix, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, in 2022, with a sequel series expected later this month.
