The David Ellison-owned streamer is apparently pretty happy with its new post-apocalyptic Avatar show.

Paramount+ throws two new seasons and a prequel at Avatar: Seven Havens

Paramount might have been having some struggles with its well-loved Avatar franchise in recent years, kicking off a minor elemental shitstorm of online anger when it decided to consign sequel film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender to a streaming release back in July. (Where it was greeted by a somewhat warm, but decidedly muted, response.) But never doubt that David Ellison’s company still thinks there’s cash to be made in Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko’s fantasy universe, as Paramount+ revealed at New York Comic-Con this weekend that it’s not only renewing new series Avatar: Seven Havens for two more seasons—bringing the just-released show’s total up to four—but also throwing a new prequel show on the pile.

This is, of course, one of the benefits of having a franchise rooted in an eternally recurring hero figure: There’s a metric butt-ton of Avatars hanging out in both the past and future of the show’s timeline, something the success of Legend Of Korra a decade ago emphasized handily. Seven Havens has drawn strong reviews for pushing that timeline even further, with a post-apocalyptic story following two twin sisters fighting for survival after discovering that they’re somehow both the new Avatar. Paramount was already pretty high on the show, given that it started the series off with a two-season order, but its strong reception after dropping its first three episodes on Friday probably helped cement the decision to give the series—showrun by long-time franchise veteran Ethan Spaulding—two more years on its tenure.

Meanwhile, Deadline reports that Paramount+ also announced new series Avatar Kuruk: Wave Of Chaos, which will focus on a key figure in the franchise’s backstory, the Avatar who was running around trying to save the world about 300 years before the original Avatar: The Last Airbender. Although he’s mostly been explored in the show’s spin-off novels, Kuruk casts an interesting shadow, as an Avatar who blew off many of his more obvious duties in favor of fighting corrupted spirits. (And also drinking and having lots of sex; they let you do that when you’re off of Nickelodeon, and safely ensconced in Novel Town.) The series will reportedly take place before all the serious depression-based hedonism, though, and will instead center on “a rebellious teenage Avatar, who bucks thousands of years of tradition by choosing to learn the four elements through globetrotting adventures, staying one step ahead of his angry teacher, rowdy pirates, and chaotic spirits.” OG Avatar co-creator Bryan Konietzko will serve as showrunner on the series.
