Hippie-dippie wellness retreat shows Joseph Gordon-Levitt its sinister side in Pendulum trailer

Wellness retreats fail another couple in need in the trailer for the upcoming horror movie Pendulum. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Patrick, a husband trying to love his wife in sickness, health, and healing after a traumatic event, Pendulum follows this devout spouse as he escorts his wife to one of those hippie-dippie retreats that are always more sinister than they appear—especially the ones run by an enigmatic leader played by Jacki Weaver. If we might be so bold, if Norman Reedus welcomes you to a desert-based health spa with an unhealthy commitment to spending time lighting candles, do yourself a favor and start requesting a refund.

The new movie, which purports to be based on a true story, comes from director Mark Heyman, the co-writer of Black Swan, and producer Darren Aronofsky. It follows Patrick and Abigail (Phoebe Dynevor) as the latter comes under Weaver’s spell and the former starts to suspect that the other residents’ mouths shouldn’t open that wide. Coupled with the frequent, terrifying utterance of the phrase “death does not exist” and the creepy, crawling demons in residence, Patrick’s time at New Mexico’s premiere cursed new-age retreat is less helpful than he anticipated.

Though it should do nothing for hangovers, Pendulum swings back and forth into theaters January 1, 2027.
