According to the Marin County Sheriff, Robin Williams was found dead in his Tiburon home today. An investigation is still ongoing, but the press release from the sheriff’s office says the coroner suspects the cause to be “suicide due to asphyxia”—though of course, a more official cause of death is still pending.

Right now, what is known is that Robin Williams was last seen alive entering the home where he lives with his wife around 10 p.m. Sunday night. This morning, a 911 call summoned emergency personnel who found Williams unconscious and not breathing. He was pronounced dead shortly after noon at the age of 63.

Though Williams’ publicist would not confirm the report of suicide, for obvious reasons, the statement issued hinted at emotional instability: “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”

Meanwhile, Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider, issued her own statement: “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is hoped that our focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

As the investigation is still ongoing and details are still being released—and everyone tries to wrap their heads around this—we’ll update as needed. And of course, we’ll have a look back at Williams’ life and career once this has settled.
