Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste
Two years ago, X-Files creator Chris Carter dropped a surprising bit of news on fans: He’d recently spoken to “a young man” who was planning to reboot the series, said spritely whippersnapper being filmmaker Ryan Coogler. (Who, just as a reminder, was already four movies deep into a remarkable run of critically and commercially successful filmmaking.) Further details about this reboot—beyond Carter stating that it would have a “diverse” cast—have been basically nil since, but Coogler has now confirmed that, yeah, he’s making a new X-Files, and he’s working on it “immediately next.”
Per Variety, Coogler brought up the reboot during an appearance on horror podcast Last Podcast On The Left this week, while fielding questions about what he’s doing now that his new Michael B. Jordan vampire movie Sinners is in theaters. (Where it’s set to do fairly well, graded on the curve of horror movies based on original IP, meaning it might nearly beat A Minecraft Movie in its third week in theaters.) “I’m working on X-Files, bro,” Coogler confirmed. “I’ve been excited for that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it.” Coogler didn’t get into any serious details, but did note that, “Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really fucking scary.”
When put slightly on the spot with a question about whether he’s been talking to Gillian Anderson—who’s been pretty vocal about having reached the end of the road with at least Carter’s version of the show, having been fairly annoyed by its treatment of Dana Scully in its most recent revival season—Coogler admitted that, yeah, they’ve spoken. “She’s incredible, and fingers crossed there.” (Which reads to us as “Hey, maybe a cameo,” but one can live in hope.) Coogler’s still rolling in a pretty hefty blank check period, and The X-Files, divorced from its serialized elements, is pretty much an evergreen concept, so we’ll join him in keeping our fingers crossed for the potential reboot.
