Sacha Baron Cohen to swashbuckle in Quentin Tarantino's new stage play

It’s important to continue diversifying one’s portfolio, especially when one makes a habit of accumulating dusty stocks few seem all that keen to invest in. No doubt this kind of thinking is top of mind for Sacha Baron Cohen, whose next project after his latest I-am-doing-a-political-prank film Ali G: Who Iz I? sees the actor pivot to the relative comforts of scripted theater. Per Deadline, Baron Cohen will star as the eponymous lead in the “swashbuckling comedy” The Popinjay Cavalier, a new stage play by Quentin Tarantino. Sony Pictures Entertainment has partnered with Sonia Friedman Productions to produce the play, with the latter known for Paddington: The Musical and Harry Potter And The Cursed Child. Further details about Tarantino’s latest project are being kept under an ostentatious floppy hat ahead of Popinjay‘s expected Spring 2027 opening in an “as-yet-undisclosed West End venue.” But this handy-dandy synopsis ought to tide us over, with its assurance that whatever Baron Cohen gets up to in The Popinjay Cavalier, it’s bound to be “rambunctious.”

“Set in 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier is a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen. A sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit.”
