When And Just Like That… premiered in 2021, it seemed like everyone had an opinion on Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), the “queer non-binary Mexican-Irish diva” that served as Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) love interest. Everyone, that is, except for Sarah Jessica Parker, who had no idea there was any discourse around the character in the first place.

The actor shared in a recent interview with The Guardian that she was “shocked” to learn Che was so widely despised. “A friend of mine brought it up to me, and it’s like: ‘What are you talking about?’ And he said: ‘Yeah, there’s all this conversation,'” she recalled. “I’ve been an actor for 50 years, and I’ve almost never paid attention to peripheral chatter. I loved working with them.”

Che’s critics largely claimed that the character felt like a caricature of queer stereotypes, their social justice persona was annoying, and in the end, they just weren’t that funny. At one point, the “peripheral chatter” got so bad that Ramirez had to remind everyone that they are not, in fact, Che in real life.

While it sounds like Parker wouldn’t care much either way, there won’t even be a conversation for her to miss this season. Che officially departed the world of And Just Like That… after breaking up with Miranda in season two. While sources claimed that the character’s arc had “reached a natural conclusion,” some fans theorized that Ramirez was written off the show due to their vocal support of Palestine. (Nixon, it should be noted, has also spoken out in support of a ceasefire.) “Our industry is so duplicitous. While they give awards away, casting directors and agents are making blacklists of actors and workers who post anything in support of Palestinians in Gaza to ensure they will not work again,” Ramirez posted on Instagram last year. “While they lift up some of their own clients who have spoken up against this genocide, they are firing and letting others who have smaller platforms go.”

And Just Like That… marches on without Che for season three, which is currently airing on Thursdays through August 14.
