Shadowcat

Who she is: Shadowcat, a.k.a. Kitty Pryde

Her power: Shadowcat can make herself and anything she touches incorporeal, allowing her to phase through solid objects. She can also send a person’s consciousness back in time as a type of temporal phase.

Her story: Kitty Pryde is one of the few mutant characters to go from a non-speaking cameo to a more prominent role between X-Men films. She phases through a wall in X-Men and through her during Col. Stryker’s raid on Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters in X2, but is given considerably more to do in X-Men: The Last Stand, where she becomes one side of the X-teen love triangle subplot. Kitty’s burgeoning friendship with Iceman fuels Rogue’s decision to take Worthington Labs’ mutant cure, almost entirely because Kitty is able to have the physical contact with Bobby that his girlfriend desperately desires. Kitty and Bobby grow closer over the course of the film, most notably with a cathartic ice-skating session after Professor X’s death, but their relationship feels more like a sibling bond than anything romantic. Shadowcat fights with the X-Men to stop the attack on Worthington Labs by Magneto and his brotherhood, and rescues Jimmy from death by dated pop culture reference when the Juggernaut goes after the source of the mutant cure.

Years later, Shadowcat plays an integral role in the rewriting of XMU continuity thanks to her new, narratively convenient power to send a person’s consciousness back in time, and she creates a different timeline by sending Wolverine to 1973 in X-Men: Days Of Future Past. With the threat of the Sentinels eliminated, Kitty presently serves on the faculty of Xavier’s School, teaching young mutants who aren’t at risk of being wiped out by giant genocide machines.

Played by: Sumela Kay in X-Men, Katie Stuart in X2, and Ellen Page in X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

Currently, Shadowcat is: A full-fledged X-Man and professor at Xavier’s School.

Where will we see her next? There are no plans for Shadowcat to appear in any upcoming X-films, although she could appear in some developing projects. Her comic-book relationship with the New Mutants makes her a frontrunner to appear in the New Mutants movie, and as one of the established present-day X-Men, she could make an appearance in Deadpool 2 if Wade drops by the X-Mansion again.
