Imagine you’re a bride-to-be planning a small, intimate wedding in a rural cabin, but first you must finally meet your groom’s family, and they don’t seem like they’re especially open to outsiders. No, we’re not talking about Carolyn Bessette in Love Story but Camila Morrone’s character in Netflix’s new series Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen. The trailer opens on her in a diner with Adam DiMarco who suggests a small ceremony with “none of the wedding bullshit.” Of course, knowing the title of the series, this appears to be an elaborate ruse.
The synopsis for Something Bad Is Going to Happen promises it will do for marriage what Rosemary’s Baby did for motherhood and what Carrie did for adolescence. As outwardly creepy as Nicky’s (DiMarco) family obviously is, Netflix’s promo materials suggest the horror might in fact be in Rachel’s (Morrone) head: “Her foreboding doubts, coupled with a series of eerie coincidences and dreadful surprises, force her to ask the question: What makes two people soulmates? And worse — what could be scarier than lifelong commitment to the wrong person?”
Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen comes from creator and showrunner Haley Z. Boston, who previously wrote on Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities before linking up with the Duffer Brothers for this series. Jennifer Jason Leigh is in the supporting cast, along with Jeff Wilbusch, Karla Crome, Gus Birney, Ted Levine, and Sawyer Fraser. Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is on Netflix on March 26.
