Sort-of Jackie Brown prequel Life Of Crime offers stylistically similar trailer

Though its wheels first started turning back in 2012, the adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s The Switch has not been without its own set of, well, switches. After Jennifer Aniston signed on, the film changed its name from The Switch to Switch in order to avoid confusion with the Jason Bateman-Jennifer Aniston comedy. Then the Daniel Schechter adaptation once again changed names to Life Of Crime, and the role of Frank Dawson shifted hands from Dennis Quaid to Tim Robbins. But now all of Schechter’s juggling has finished, resulting in this first trailer.

Life Of Crime is notable for serving as a sort-of prequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, a film based on another of Leonard’s novels, 1992’s Rum Punch. Though Life Of Crime doesn’t directly reference Jackie Brown, it bears some aesthetic similarities—not to mention younger versions of Robert De Niro’s Louis Gara and Samuel L. Jackson’s Ordell Robbie characters, played here, respectively, by John Hawkes and Yasiin Bey (better known as Mos Def). And while Schechter’s stylish take on the ’70s–coupled with a similarly colorful title card–definitely gives Life Of Crime the appearance of a prequel, it’s obviously one that’s interested in standing on its own.
