The shaking up of MSNBC continues today, as journalist and veteran pointer-at-screen Steve Kornacki will depart for NBC and NBC Sports, Variety reports. The exact timeline of Kornacki’s departure isn’t exactly clear at this moment, but the trade reports that the move will be part of Comcast spinning off most of its cable channels, which was first set in motion last fall. The move indicates that Comcast and NBC Universal see him as a valuable asset worth keeping around; Kornacki will hold the title of chief data analyst for both the news and sports divisions.
However, this is more for MSNBC to deal with, which has seen substantial staff changes since Donald Trump was reelected in November. (Just about two weeks before Comcast formally announced plans to dump its cable networks, in fact.) The channel brought Rachel Maddow back full time, but cancelled Joy Reid’s The ReidOut. In January, Andrea Mitchell also left MSNBC for the mothership. That same month, Chuck Todd left NBC News proper after moderating Meet The Press for 11 years. Kornacki is now expected to pop up on Meet The Press.
Per Variety, the talks for Kornacki’s switch have been in progress for about a year. His new position is described as “a contributor role that has a long-term commitment,” meaning that he is allowed to pursue outside opportunities so long as they don’t conflict with his responsibilities at NBC News and Sports. Maybe Kornacki can go the Joe Biden root, and get himself a talent agent—there are audiobooks to be read!
