Netflix orders prequel to its other Stranger Things prequel

The flagship series might be done, but Netflix is not done with Stranger Things altogether. This morning, the streamer officially announced Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, set to debut in 2028. It will be a prequel to the other Stranger Things prequel: The stage play The First Shadow. Netflix hasn’t shared too much else about the show other than it will be set in the 1950s and that production will take place in New Mexico.

“We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating,” says Matt and Ross Duffer in a press statement. “We’re so grateful to our incredible team of collaborators: our showrunner Kate Trefry, who has been in the trenches with us since Season 2 and wrote Stranger Things: The First Shadow; and our director, Joe Wright, a brilliant artist whose work we’ve long admired. We can’t wait for you to see what they’re cooking up. It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new… actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime — watch the skies, nerds!”

The Duffers have actually shared more information about the story previously, however, according to Deadline. The series is said to explain a rock that Henry Creel finds in a scientist’s briefcase during the play; Henry eventually grows up to be Vecna and that rock is also a plotpoint in the fifth season of the show. The trade also reports that Netflix filmed a few episodes of the stage play, presumably to eventually release on the streamer and help bridge the gap between the series and this new prequel. It’s also reported by at least one audience member that details of the play—specifically moving some of the action from Rachel, Nevada to Marion, Nevada—were tweaked during the filmed performances, presumably to align better with this new prequel. We’ll see how that goes, but in the meantime, you can take a look at a teaser below.
