Survivor is pissed that “Eye Of The Tiger” was used at a Kim Davis rally

The lady from Misery is having quite a month: Kim Davis has gone from your ordinary born-again, thrice-divorced civil servant to a media lightning rod to an anti-gay political martyr, all by doing absolutely nothing. (In case you’ve been away from the internet for a while, Davis rose to fame for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Rowan County, Kentucky, where she works as a clerk; Davis was jailed for her non-actions for five days.) According to The New York Times, Davis was released from jail this afternoon, subsequently appearing onstage at a rally with Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who is obviously an excellent judge of character. You could say that Davis did her time, took her chances. She went the distance, now she’s back on her feet, just a woman and her will to deny (people their rights).

Except the dudes from Survivor are really not cool with that. See, Davis and Huckabee used “Eye Of The Tiger” as the theme song for their homophobia pity party this afternoon, a move that was definitely not approved by the song’s co-writers, Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan. Peterik has released a statement to Billboard about the misuse of his motivational anthem:

I was very surprised and dismayed at the misuse of the song I co-wrote with Frankie Sullivan for Rocky lll. The song has motivated thousands through the years to reach beyond their limits. Its use for the release of Kim Davis does not support my views or my politics. I have contacted my publishers to make sure this usage is stopped immediately.

Sullivan’s response was less articulate, but arguably more passionate:

Cease and desist orders have reportedly been issued, and according to TMZ a lawsuit may be on its way. Clerks willing to file those documents shouldn’t be too difficult to find.
