The 3rd highest-grossing film of 2019 was quietly dumped onto Netflix

People are always complaining that there aren’t any good movies on Netflix but, as IndieWire reports, the streaming service recently added the third highest grossing film of the year to its library. There’s only one problem: You’ve probably never heard of it. The Wandering Earth is a Chinese science-fiction film directed by Frant Gwo that was released back in February and made over $700 million worldwide. That puts it right behind Endgame and Captain Marvel on the list of the year’s top films and makes it the second highest-grossing non-English film of all time, not that anybody at Netflix seems to care.

As IndieWire notes, the company added The Wandering Earth to its catalog last week without so much as a press release or an announcement trailer. In fact, Netflix didn’t even include the film in its list of new additions for April and May. Presumably, the company doesn’t think American audiences will care about this movie being available—considering it was released in 22 U.S. cities back in February and only made $5 million—but honestly, it sounds pretty cool to us.

Based on a short story by Liu Cixin, the Hugo Award-winning author of The Three-Body Problem, The Wandering Earth tells the story of a group of astronauts working as part of a multi-generational mission to propel the planet Earth out of the solar system and prevent it from being devoured by the expanding red giant sun. It sounds like the kind of high concept sci-fi action film that American audiences love. So, next time you’re scrolling through the Netflix app complaining that there’s nothing to watch, maybe give one of world’s most popular films a try.
