Nearly a decade after searching Under The Silver Lake, David Robert Mitchell returns for an Amblin-inspired tale of suburban sci-fi.

It Follows director channels Spielberg in first The End Of Oak Street teaser

After the quiet, almost hidden 2018 release of David Robert Mitchell’s Under The Silver Lake, a knotty stoner noir about the pop-culture-poisoned mind of the American misogynist, it was fair to assume we wouldn’t hear much from the It Follows director for some time. The movie was a big-time bomb that was ravaged by critics who took some time to come around to the fact that the movie is good, actually. Alas, the ever-bubbling rumors surrounding an It Follows sequel always seemed like a “Get Out of Jail Free” card for the director, a card he played in 2023, when the long-awaited sequel was announced. But before They Follow got off the ground, Mitchell had another, more secretive project in the works at J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot imprint. Without spoiling anything, Abrams’ influence, which by proxy is the influence of Steven Spielberg, is all over the first trailer for The End Of Oak Street, which immediately recalls E.T., Abrams’ Super 8, and its progeny, Stranger Things. But before we go any further, here’s the trailer:

Unsurprisingly, a lot is going on at The End Of Oak Street. Is this the world’s first time-traveling cul-de-sac? Well, it might be a little more complicated than that. Here’s the synopsis:

“After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings.”

The movie stars Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, My Old Ass’ Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery, Frankenstein’s Young Victor. The movie opens in theaters on August 14, 2026.
