Foo Fighters’ “Everlong” was a massive alt radio and MTV hit when it was released in 1997 as the second single from the band’s second album, in part because of the song’s infectious melody and in part because of the light-hearted, Michel Gondry-directed video that featured Dave Grohl using his inflated hand as a weapon. The song managed to reach an even larger audience when the acoustic version stormed the radio, emphasizing the track’s heartbroken lyrics about the end of Grohl’s first marriage.
Messing with the song is a bit of a risk, as Daniel Barassi notes repeatedly on his website when introducing a mashup he created by combining “Everlong” with audio from Beastie Boys’ “Groove Holmes” and video from The Naked Gun 2 1/2. As Foo Fighter fans are a devoted bunch, Barassi feels the need to include numerous disclaimers for his own creation in the likely futile attempt to avoid online harassment from the Foo-devoted.
The end result, though, is a mashup that works, shifting “Everlong” into something more sexed-up and corny, emphasized by Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley getting it on in their film’s spoof of Ghost.
