It seems like we’re entering another gilded age in this country, one that can’t even give us a really good hat. (Seriously, can’t the MAGA crowd invest in a few feathers or something?) If you’re in need of a little escapism—one with far more interesting headware—why not travel back to the 1880s with a first look at season three of HBO’s The Gilded Age? The tariffs may be similar, but at least the old ones gave rise to some really great characters.
The series’ upcoming third season promises a great deal of upheaval for everyone involved. “The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic and social change, when empires were built, but no victory came without sacrifice,” the season’s logline reads. “Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society. Bertha sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights while George risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionize the railroad industry — if it doesn’t ruin him first. Across the street, the Brook household is thrown into chaos as Agnes refuses to accept Ada’s new position as lady of the house. Peggy meets a handsome doctor from Newport whose family is less than enthusiastic about her career. As all of New York hastens toward the future, their ambition may come at the cost of what they truly hold dear.”
But these characters—Bertha (Carrie Coon), Agnes (Christine Baranski), Ada (Cynthia Nixon), George (Morgan Spector), Gladys (Taissa Farmiga), Peggy (Denée Benton), and more—aren’t just striving for power in the moment, creator Julian Fellowes shared with Vogue this week. “Ambition is not enough—they want to be well-remembered,” he said. “That’s a predicament that I find interesting and I like to explore it.”
We’ll see just how they’re remembered when The Gilded Age season 3 premieres this June on HBO and Max. For now, check out the new first look images (and all those great hats) below:
